Special Needs Adoption Program (SNAP)

SNAP is looking for families for Special Needs Children. Special Needs Children are Caucasian children over the age of ten years, African-American children of all ages, sibling groups of three or more children and children with moderate to severe physical, mental and/or emotional disabilities.

The Department for Social Services prepares families, free of charge, for the challenges of adopting special needs children. Families attend a series of educational sessions designed to help families understand the issues that adopted children face. During preparation, families are given an opportunity to meet and talk with other adoptive families. Successful SNAP families are often families who have experienced and overcome losses in their own lives. Therefore, as parents, they have special strengths and an understanding of these children.

After a family completes the group preparation and is approved to adopt, the placement process begins. The family learns about the child, meets the child and visits over a period of time to get to know the child. When EVERYONE is ready, the actual placement occurs.

Following the placement, families are provided support which may include counseling for the family, information on how to obtain medical or educational services, or just a friendly ear that understands the concerns of the family. Through the Adoption Subsidy Program, the Department may be able to defray some of the costs of caring for and meeting the special needs of the adopted children.

The SNAP Book, a photo listing of all children currently available for adoption, is available at your local Department for Social Services Office and in many public libraries across the state.
